WORKSHOP

SafeTALK

safeTALK is a half day (3.5 hour) suicide prevention training course that can help you make a difference. Know what to do if someone’s suicidal by following the easy to remember TALK steps – Tell, Ask, Listen and Keep-safe. These practical steps offer immediate help to someone having thoughts of suicide and helps you both move forward to connect with more specialised support.

The safeTALK course was developed by LivingWorks in Canada and is delivered worldwide. It complements the more comprehensive 2 day ASIST course by conveniently widening the net of suicide alert helpers to ensure that thoughts of suicide aren’t missed, dismissed or avoided. The safeTALK course is based on the principles of maximum dissemination and minimum cost.

The key aims of the workshop are:

  • Helps you to recognise when somebody is having thoughts of suicide.

  • Guides you through the easy to remember TALK steps that are: Tell, Ask, Listen and Keep Safe.

  • Done by combining discussion, video clips and overcoming barriers talking about suicide can create.

  • On asking the important question "Are you feeling suicidal?" the workshop then goes on to show you how you can connect the person in crisis to further support resources.

The intended outcome of the training is:

  • Realising when we are missing, dismissing and avoiding invitations from somebody who is suicidal.

  • Identifying the people who are having thoughts of suicide

  • Confidently being able to handover to the appropriate resources that can provide safe suicide interventions and practical aftercare.

WORKSHOP

Working Well

By Dr Ali Hutchinson

In response to community need following the economical fallout from COVID, we have launched a series of one-off workshops designed to enhance employability and wellbeing. Running every third Saturday afternoon, these sessions combine psychoeducation, wellbeing support, and employability skills, with 1:1 bespoke support for a comprehensive package of personal development.

These workshops are designed for individuals wishing to enhance their employability, improve their work/life balance, maintain their wellbeing in work, increase their confidence, and be supported to navigate the world of job hunting. By working in a small, informal group, attendees are also able to learn and benefit from the experiences of their peers. Example content includes CV development, stress management, understanding and overcoming low motivation, problem solving, conducting effective job searches, communication skills, how to write cover letters, and developing coping strategies to improve wellbeing.

Post-lockdown, more and more clients are presenting at The Martin Gallier Project with unemployment, poor job security, lack of fulfilment, and a poor work/life balance as contributing factors to their crisis.  Since the Working Well launch in September, the sessions have received the following feedback:

  • 100% of attendees reported feeling more motivated

  • 100% of attendees reported feeling more hopeful

  • 100% of attendees reported feeling more equipped with practical knowledge to help their situation

  • 100% of attendees reported feeling better able to handle problems and barriers.'

Working Well is delivered by Ali, a Suicide Intervention Worker, and Deryn, a local Recruiter and Volunteer at The Martin Gallier Project.
